By 2022, France will impose a total ban on the use of perchloroethylene (or tetrachloroethylene) in dry cleaners located near residential areas.
This is a highly volatile solvent at room temperature. The European Union has even classified it as “harmful to health” and “dangerous to the environment.” It can cause numerous health problems, such as:

• respiratory tract irritation,
• dizziness,
• nausea,
• headaches,
• memory loss,
• or even even loss of consciousness, when it is present in high concentrations.

It should be replaced in dry cleaning with less hazardous solvents.
