As air quality professionals, we are regularly contacted by people seeking information and explanations about various air treatment devices. This article will help you better understand the purposes of these different devices and determine which one is best suited to your needs.

Air cleaner, air purifier, or air freshener:

These three terms refer to the same type of device; they are synonyms. An air purifier (also known as an air sanitizer or air cleaner) is a device that filters the air and improves indoor air quality by removing household and industrial pollutants (fine particles, pollen, diesel particulates, pet dander, volatile organic compounds, etc.).

Air ionizer:

An ionizer is a device that generates negative ions in the air to remove airborne particles. Please note that the correct term is “ionizer,” not “ionator”!

But how does it work?

It’s important to know that airborne pollutants (allergens, pet dander, pollen, dust, dust mites, etc.) are positively charged (positive ions). An ionizer generates negative ions in the air. These particles are then neutralized by the negative ions and drawn to the floor, so they’re no longer within reach of your nose. Note: An air ionizer has limited effectiveness. Air conditioner:

An air conditioner is used to control the temperature of the air to your liking. It provides heating in the winter and cools the air during hot weather.

Air humidifier:

An air humidifierhelps maintain anidealhumidity level—between 45% and 55%—and combats excessively dry air. In fact, excessively dry air can cause headaches, dry coughs, and other symptoms…

This device disperses water in the form of mist throughout the room.

Air dehumidifier:

An air dehumidifier is a device thatreduces the humidity level in a room.

But how does it work?

The dehumidifier draws in humid air from the room; the water vapor then passes through the evaporator and condenses into water. The water is collected in a tank, and the dry air is recirculated into the room.

CMV (controlled mechanical ventilation):

A mechanical ventilation system is a set of mechanical devices designed to ensure air exchange within rooms, particularly in so-called "wet" areas such as bathrooms, toilets, and kitchens. It is a legal requirement for all homes built since 1982. This system is built into the home.

Fan

A fan is a device that circulates air and creates a draft in the form of an artificial breeze. It helps you cool off quickly.
